Typical interior renovations today involve creating a more open plan, enlarging the kitchen, creating a multi-use family area, making a master bedroom suite, and finding space for more storage, an additional bath, another bedroom, or a home office. Achieving all this while preserving the home's aesthetic character is a unique challenge.

Even a modest renovation will require hundreds of decisions by the homeowners. An organized and timely way of getting those decisions made during the design phase will make the construction phase more efficient and less stressful. At Downer / Associates one of our key tasks is to prioritize issues and to help our clients understand their options and what the trade-offs will be. To better inform the decisions, we recommend involving a general contractor in the design phase, either as a consultant or as part of a design-build team, in order to get accurate pricing and review construction phase issues. Our most successful projects are those that had a close collaboration between the homeowners, contractor, and architect.
